Tim Manuel – Taking Hendrix to the next level

The apple didn’t fall very far from the tree, Tim Manuel’s interest in the marketing field stemmed from being inspired by his father – Bob Manuel who was a marketer for a large cap company. His father’s excitement with the field led Tim to decide to follow in his father’s footsteps after graduating Fairfield Preparatory School in Connecticut. He went on to complete his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing at the University of Maryland, College Park.  After some time in the workplace, he later earned a Master’s Degree in Marketing from Johns Hopkins University.

Wanting a challenge, Tim determined that he wanted to put himself in an industry that was highly competitive, with that in mind..the copier industry is where he headed.  Tim decided to step up to the challenge and in 2010, joined the Hendrix Business Systems team as a sales personnel. After a few years, he transferred from sales to more of an operational and marketing role as Roger Hendrix wanted to utilize his marketing background.

His time on the sales team proved to be valuable because in his new position he could affect positive change immediately, especially in areas that help the Sales Team conduct their job more effectively. More specially,  he was instrumental in transforming an out of the box CRM system into a sophisticated and user friendly sales tool. This was a very big project which was very crucial to the development of the company. It involved managing and writing codes, data management and conducting the related training sessions. Plus, the CRM systems is a Critical Sales tool in prospecting, creating a sales deals, pricing, and managing sales paperwork. All of which are essential to the operational success of the company.

In addition, this role change proved to be a step in the right direction for the company. Tim was able to both develop and utilize his project management skills to open our office in downtown Charlotte. He was involved in everything from the construction phase, dealing with the architects, putting up signage to finally opening our doors to the public.

Tim has been essential in executing various Technology Shows in each of the four Hendrix Business Systems locations, which have been an important way of driving sales for the company.

Tim views the company’s ability to be very flexible and efficient are traits that make our high level of customer service and satisfaction consistent. Hendrix understands the adverse impact on customers’ productivity when their system goes down or a copier has stopped working.

Hendrix also plays its part in keeping the environment safe and sustainable by implementing recycling programs. We ask customers to turn in their used toners and inks so that we can dispose of them properly. This type of program is an initiative that Tim wishes other companies in the same field would also adopt to help make the environment a safer place.

All the team members who attended the last company picnic were pleasantly surprised to have their ears treated to his sweet guitar music. Yup, you read that correctly. A little known fact about Tim is that he has been playing the guitar since he was 19 years old! As a high schooler, he was quite the interactive type as well. He was part of the Sea Scouts, BSA, Ship 84, in Southport Connecticut, which under the leadership of a great scouts master and team, he learned how to work with a team, be a good leader and to always work hard.

Even though Tim spent four years of his early life living in Puerto Rico, he readily admits his spanish is a bit rusty. So the next time you are in contact with him be sure to ask  ‘como estas?’, and see how he responds.

Common Criteria certification for security

Achieving Common Criteria Certification is not so common. That’s why Xerox is especially proud to receive the industry’s most stringent information security standard certification from National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP).

With cyber security threats growing in both numbers and complexity, NIAP determined to tighten up its security standard for hard copy devices. In November 2017, 10 Xerox AltaLink MFPs became the first products to receive Common Criteria certification from NIAP for the new standard.

Xerox-McAfee solutions provide unrivaled security

Xerox print devices have been engineered with security in mind. That’s why Xerox is the only company that embeds whitelisting technology from McAfee, and provides a free extension for ePolicy Orchestrator.

Xerox’s AltaLink multifunction printers come bundled with McAfee Embedded Control software, so you can rest easy knowing that your MFPs, and any data associated with them, are safe and secure. Key features:

What motivates cybercriminals?

The obvious answer is money, but cybersecurity company McAfee wanted to know if there is more to it. McAfee researchers examined recent examples of ransomware and the accompanying ransom notes that included email addresses where victims could send their payments or ask questions. The researchers sent emails asking the “actors” if they would answer a few questions.

Initially, the McAfee team received a few replies, but most of the actors did not want to cooperate. No surprise there. But their luck slowly changed over the next few weeks, and the researchers gathered a collection of conversations. Their findings:

  • Yes, it’s about the money. Travel, cars, a house, and some were simply paying off debts.
  • Almost all said they were willing to negotiate the ransom price, if the victim cannot afford to pay.
  • People become ransomers because they believe cybercrime is low-risk with high returns. This is increasingly untrue, because law enforcement agencies have partnerships with academic institutions and cybersecurity companies (like McAfee).

Meet Morgan Rogers whose middle name might as well be “computer-engineering”!

After serving 6 years in the Navy, Morgan Rogers returned home to North Carolina and began working at Hendrix Business Systems, the company his grandfather created. He started out part-time with the Delivery team, while also pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering at UNC Charlotte.  Gifted with a talent for technology, Morgan quickly transitioned from the Delivery to being an integral part of the IT Department. Once he graduated, he moved to full-time responsibilities as our Software Solutions Specialist.

As a specialist,  he has now become an invaluable link between the client and the technology, assisting customers with the products that will help their companies grow.  Morgan is most proud of his involvement with the success and growth of software solutions here at Hendrix Business Systems. It is not easy to explain an intangible item to a client, but he found ways to demystify the solutions and explain them in a way that allows the client to see the value of the software. This approach has allowed Morgan to thrive as he is great at building and maintaining strong relationships with clients…in fact, his favorite part of his role is the face-to-face interactions while he is onsite.

Morgan takes the lead in both customer Proof of Concept demonstrations and in behind-the-scenes lab tests with new and emerging print and document solutions. Never satisfied with simply “doing things as they’ve always been done”, he works to refine integrated systems to enhance the user experience. Additionally, he has extensive experience with uniFLOW—an industry-leading single-platform solution for both printing and scanning. Utilizing his expertise has made Hendrix Business Systems one of the top 25 uniFLOW dealers in the U.S.

Morgan believes that knowledge and experience are the main ingredients that set Hendrix Business Systems apart from its competitors. Hendrix undoubtedly has some of the most experienced and knowledgeable technicians in the area, who routinely perform tasks that some other dealers think are impossible!  This allows Morgan and his team to handle problems quickly and without the need to call for tier two support on common problems, which saves time for our clients. As a child, Morgan often observed and participated in these various projects with them. Morgan comes from a large family and credits them for him being the friendly, knowledgeable and creative man he is today.

Meet Brandon Sherrill – Taking customer service to the next level

Brandon Sherrill grew up in North Carolina where he attended Independence High School. After graduating with honors, he obtained a degree in Industrial Designs at The Savannah College of Art and Design. His first job was as a graphic designer and prepress operator at a small print shop. His passion for the industry motivated him to continue his professional development and he has since received many certifications and accreditations including IGEN certification, EFI Fiery Pro and more.  His background in color management, graphic designing, troubleshooting, workflow management and customizing workflows for end users has been invaluable to the small and large firms he has worked for over the years.

Interestingly enough, Brandon was a former customer of Hendrix Business Systems and was very impressed with the great service he received and the knowledge of our staff. He subsequently applied for a job at the company and was offered the position of ‘Production Support Specialist’, a position created specifically for him as management believed his unique skill set would help bridge the gap between sales and technology.  His over 14 years of experience in the industry prior to joining our team four years ago has proven invaluable in his education of the sales team about the products the company sells. Similarly, his testing of potential machines/technology purchases ensure optimal performance and customer satisfaction for our clients before they make their investment. Brandon also enjoys training end users and visiting our clients. A great day for him is when he is able to assist customers and witness them being pleased with the service received. This inclination for customer satisfaction is a trait that is embedded in both the Hendrix family and Brandon.

Brandon is grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a great company and to have had many remarkable experiences throughout the years. One that comes to mind and is worth mentioning was when he was doing a service training for the Carolina Panthers and he was lucky enough to have a t-shirt signed by Luke Kuechly (Panther linebacker and one of Brandon’s favorite players). He even got the opportunity to meet coach Ron Rivera! Brandon was so excited, he forgot to take a picture with them, but it was an experience that is indelibly etched in his memory and was definitely one of the most exciting installs he has ever done. Another great aspect of the firm that Brandon can attest to is Roger Hendrix’s commitment to not his customers, but also the growth and professional development of his team.  As such, encourage abounds in the firm for staff to pursue higher levels of education in their field. Speaking of teams and fields…another Brandon is also very proud of being the founder and coach of the Hendrix slow pitch softball team.

You might be surprised to know that Brandon has a black belt in taekwondo,  which was sparked from his child fascination with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! He also knows how to cut his own hair, a skill not many of us can say we have under our belt.  Brandon always puts God first, he comes from a Christian home and was taught to treat others as you would like to be treated. This was instilled in him by his grandfather, Charles Wesley Long,  fondly known as ‘Paw Paw’, who played a significant role molding Brandon into the man he is today. Life’s lessons from his grandparents can be credited for his humble demeanor and desire to learn something new everyday. Brandon loves to always be of assistance to his customers, so if you’re in need of some black belt level office machinery setup, support and training…give him a call!

Meet Tom Sexton, our long-serving IT whiz!

Passionate about learning new things and keeping abreast with the rapid changes in the IT field, Tom Sexton is someone who combines a solid understanding of computer fundamentals with years of hands-on experience and troubleshooting skills.  As Director of IT at Hendrix Business Systems, Tom is proud of his accomplishments over the 30 years that he’s been with the company.

Looking back, Tom says he has absolutely no regrets. Tom started his career as a delivery driver for A.F. Dancy Company in 1973.  In 1974 he learned how to repair the then highly popular IBM Selectric typewriters, a skill he developed and used to repair end user’s equipment and on occasion, even other dealer’s equipment. When the typewriter business faded, Tom had to change his business model where his focus was more on computers and computer repairs. He has always loved the challenge of taking something that is broken and fixing it, whether it be mechanical or nowadays, digital.

In December 1987, Tom was in the process of closing his business in Charlotte and selling store fixtures when Roger Hendrix and Kurt Hendrix came to buy some shelving.  They had a conversation during that encounter and Tom was invited to visit the Hendrix store in Monroe since he was at the time deciding what was going to come next in business. Tom choose Hendrix because he saw this as an opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a growing company.  Hendrix Business Systems has a great staff of employees and they take pride in providing their customers with a product or service, often the same day or next. They are flexible to their customer’s needs much more than their competitors. Whilst their competitors take an average of 4 days to set up and connect after delivering a machine, Hendrix usually delivers, setup and connect the same day.  Providing exceptional customer service is a priority to the company and taking care of its staff is equally important and this is one of many things that make Tom feels at home. Just over 30 years later, Tom frequently pats himself on the shoulder for making the decision to join the Hendrix Business Systems family.

As the business grew, the need for tracking service calls by other means than paper notes became apparent.  Tom is still today very proud of the customized database program he wrote to enter, track and print service calls and invoices on an electronic typewriter.  Since the program was custom, modifications were easily made to accommodate business growth and needs. In recent times, Tom completed the implementation of a network and telephone system, which gives the company the ability to connect and manage all their branches under one standard communication platform, another challenging project successfully completed of which he is proud.   One of Tom’s proudest moments was when Roger Hendrix presented him with a crystal plaque celebrating his 25 years with Hendrix Business Systems. Tom’s innate ability to be a problem solver also helped him receive a letter of commendation for writing a program for a local volunteer fire department to track ambulance response calls. So when he is not busy writing programs or doing anything IT related, you might be surprised to know that as much as he loves technology, he’s not on social media as he’s not a fan. Instead, he’s likely to be at the movies, going to comedy clubs, taking a trip or just simply listening to music as he finds this most enjoyable.

Tom credits his parents and eight years of private school for molding the person he is today. He also believes that without trustworthiness and truthfulness, no-one can succeed in anything.

  • Canon’s PRISMAsync Color Print Server version 6, which is now standard, offers embedded color verification and validation and can help a broad range of customers to achieve optimal, predictable print quality. The redesigned user interface further helps customers navigate quickly.
  • The imagePRESS Servers H300 V2 and G200 powered by EFI Fiery® technology provide new management tools to help users print jobs correctly the first time.
  • For the imagePRESS Server H300 V2, Canon now includes the new Media Librarian feature to help simplify the process of creating, editing and organizing media stocks on imagePRESS devices.

The imagePRESS C850 Digital Color Press Series offers users outstanding quality, productivity and versatility in a compact, scalable footprint. Designed for small-to-medium commercial, franchise, in-plant, transactional and quick printers, the imagePRESS C850 digital color press is equipped to handle a variety of media options including envelopes, and heavy, coated, and textured stocks up to 110 lb.
